# Overview
A winged people who originated on the Elemental Plane of Air, aarakocra soar through the sky wherever they wander. The first aarakocra served the Wind Dukes of Aaqa—mighty beings of air—and were imbued with a measure of their masters' power over winds. Their descendants still command echoes of that power.
From below, aarakocra look like large birds and thus are sometimes called birdfolk. Only when they roost on a branch or walk across the ground is their Humanoid nature clear. Standing upright, aarakocra are typically about 5 feet tall, and they have long, narrow legs that taper to sharp talons. Feathers cover their bodies—usually red, orange, yellow, brown, or gray. Their heads are also avian, often resembling those of parrots or eagles.
# Mechanics
**Flight.** Because of your wings, you have a [[Fly Speed]] equal to your [[Speed]]. You can't use this flying speed if you're wearing Medium or Heavy Armor.
**Talons.** When you use your [[Unarmed Strike]] and deal damage, you can choose to strike with your talons. You deal Slashing damage equal to 1d6 plus your STR modifier instead of the normal damage of an [[Unarmed Strike]].
**Wind Caller (Lvl 3).** Your connection to the Elemental Plane of Air grants you mastery over the wind. When you reach character level 3, you always have the [[Gust of Wind]] spell prepared. You can cast it once without a spell slot, and you regain the ability to cast it in that way when you finish a [[Long Rest]].
You can also cast the spell using any spell slots you have of the appropriate level. INT, WIS or CHA is your spellcasting ability for this spell you cast with this trait (choose the ability when you select this species):
**Planar Assistance (Lvl 5).** When you reach character level 5, you can call upon your connection to the Elemental Plane of Air to call for assistance. You can cast [[Summon Elemental]], requiring no [[Spell Components|Material]] components, as a [[Circle Spellcasting|Circle Spell]] using the [[Circle Spellcasting#Distribute|Distribute]] Option.
If you lose [[Concentration|Concentration]] on this effect, the spell fails and is wasted and you can only complete the casting if you have a minimum of 1 [[Circle Spellcasting#Secondary Casters|Secondary Caster]].
Each Secondary Caster contributing to the spell can choose to expend a spell slot (no action required) to increase the spell's level by 1. If the spell fails, these spell slots are expended.
You can use this trait a number of times equal to your [[Proficiency Bonus Table|Proficiency Bonus]], and you regain all expended uses when you finish a [[Long Rest]].
