>A Long Rest is a period of extended downtime—at least 8 hours—available to any creature. During a Long Rest, you sleep for at least 6 hours and perform no more than 2 hours of light activity, such as reading, talking, eating, or standing watch. > >During sleep, you have the [[Unconscious]] condition. After you finish a Long Rest, you must wait at least 16 hours before starting another one. # Overview ## Benefits **Benefits of the Rest.** To start a Long Rest, you must have at least 1 HP. When you finish the rest, you gain the following benefits: - **1: Regain All HP.** You regain all lost HP and all spent [[Hit Point Dice]]. If your HP maximum was reduced, it returns to normal. - **Spellcaster.** If you are Level 5 or higher and have the Spellcasting or Pact Magic Feature, you instead regain HP equal to your CON modifier (minimum 1) × your Level. - You may expend Hit Point Dice as if taking a [[Short Rest]] to regain [[HP]] before the end of the [[Long Rest]]. - **2: Ability Scores Restored.** If any of your ability scores were reduced, they return to normal. - **3: Exhaustion Reduced**. If you have the [[Exhaustion]] condition, its level decreases by 1. - **4: Special Feature.** Some features are recharged by a Long Rest. If you have such a feature, it recharges in the way specified in its description.
## Interruptions **Interrupting the Rest.** A Long Rest is stopped by the following interruptions: 1. Rolling Initiative 2. Casting a spell other than a cantrip 3. Taking any damage 4. 1 hour of walking or other physical exertion. If you rested at least 1 hour before the interruption you gain the benefits of a [[Short Rest]]. You can resume a Long Rest immediately after an interruption. If you do so, the rest requires 1 additional hour per interruption to finish.
# Sleep ## Sleep In Armour **Armour Types.** Sleeping in light armor has no adverse effect on the wearer, but sleeping in medium or heavy armor makes it difficult to recover fully during a long rest. **Medium or Heavy Armour.** When you finish a [[Long Rest]] during which you slept in medium or heavy armor, you regain only one quarter of your spent Hit Dice (minimum of one die). If you have any levels of [[Exhaustion]], the rest doesn't reduce your [[Exhaustion]] level.
## Waking Someone **Waking Creature Up.** A creature that is naturally sleeping, as opposed to being in a magically or chemically induced sleep, wakes up if it takes any damage or if someone else uses an action to shake or slap the creature awake. A sudden loud noise—such as yelling, thunder, or a ringing bell—also awakens someone that is sleeping naturally. **Whispers (PP 20).** Whispers don't disturb sleep, unless a sleeper's passive Wisdom (Perception) score is 20 or higher and the whispers are within 10 feet of the sleeper. **Normal Speech (PP 15).** Speech at a normal volume awakens a sleeper if the environment is otherwise silent (no wind, birdsong, crickets, street sounds, or the like) and the sleeper has a Passive Perception of 15 or higher.
## No Sleep **24 Hours.** Whenever you end a 24-hour period without finishing a long rest, you must succeed on a DC 10 CON saving throw or gain one [[Exhaustion]] level. After the first 24 hours, the DC increases by 5 for each consecutive 24-hour period without a [[Long Rest]]. The DC resets to 10 when you finish a Long Rest.
