# Overview Madness can be Short-Term, Long-Term, or Indefinite. More mundane effects, like the ones presented in the guidelines below, impose Short-Term Madness, which lasts for just a few minutes. More horrific effects or cumulative effects can result in Long-Term or Indefinite Madness. A creature’s intellect can help it understand eldritch knowledge without breaking its mind and a creature can add its INT modifier to saving throws it makes against Madness. <br> # Gaining Madness & Duration - **Stunned Condition.** When a creature becomes afflicted by [[Madness]], be it [[Short-Term Madness Table|Short-Term]], [[Long-Term Madness Table|Long-Term]], or [[Indefinite Madness Table|Indefinite]], the creature has the [[Stunned]] condition until the start of its next turn, and then the Madness takes effect. - **Short-Term Madness Duration.** A creature afflicted with [[Short-Term Madness Table|Short-Term]] is subjected to an effect from the [[Short-Term Madness Table]] for 1d4 minutes. - **Long-Term Madness Duration.** A creature afflicted with [[Long-Term Madness Table|Long-Term]] is subjected to an effect from the [[Long-Term Madness Table]] for 1d4 × Eldritch Moons (or 1d4 x 10 days if you aren’t using Eldritch Moons in your world). <br> # Curing Madness > **Cure Tiers.** Cures for madness work top-down: whatever cures a higher tier of madness automatically cures all lower tiers, but lower-tier cures cannot cure higher tiers. ## Permanent Cures - **Short-Term Madness:** The creature is subjected to the [[Lesser Restoration]] spell. - **Long-Term Madness:** The creature is subjected to the [[Greater Restoration]] spell or [[Modify Memory]] is used to remove the memory of the traumatic event. - **Indefinite Madness:** The creature is cured with a [[Wish]] spell, or killed and brought back to life with a [[True Resurrection]] spell. ## Temporary Cures - **Short-Term Madness:** The creature is subjected [[Calm Emotions]] spell or has a Momentum Die (Jaegar Class). - **Long-Term Madness:** The creature is subjected to the [[Mind Blank]] spell or is [[Drunkenness#3. Inebriated|Inebriated]]. - **Indefinite Madness:** The creature is in the area of a [[Hallow]] or [[Holy Aura]] spell, or a location that wards off Eldritch Influences.
